Volunteer with HRCA! Our volunteers are a vital part of HRCA’s success in fulfilling our mission to bring the life benefits of chess to the Hampton Roads community.

HRCA is also a certifying organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

What Do HRCA Volunteers Do?

Community support is a must to keep things going smoothly.  Our volunteer chess heroes assist with officiating local tournaments, provide extra classroom support, and help with other needs in our chess programming. They set up venues, help ensure smooth event operations, assist with scorekeeping, help with concessions, participate in fundraising efforts, and enjoy playing chess with members of our community at festivals and clubs as ambassadors of HRCA.

Presidential Volunteer Service Award

We are a certifying organization for the AmeriCorps’ Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA). This award recognizes volunteers who positively impact communities, and is open to US citizens and permanent residents, ages 5-adult. There are Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards available for cumulative hours served each year. The PVSA also have a Lifetime Achievement Award for those who complete 4,000+ hours of service.
